AREA BAND RELEASES CD OF OWN HOLIDAY TUNE

Most holiday songs have a habit of being sweeter than eggnog.

For the first week of December, cheery Christmas songs can be just as delicious as a cup or two of the syrupy concoction.

But being inundated with a month's worth of perky holiday jingles can leave a radio listener feeling like they downed the whole punch bowl of rum-soaked liquid in one gulp.

That's why the Perkasie-based band Clashing Plaid recorded its festive tribute to the season, "All I got for Christmas was Drunk"."You hear the same Christmas songs every year," said Clashing Plaid lead singer and rhythm guitarist Anthony Porter. It's a Christmas song with an attitude.

The band members hope their edgy holiday tune will become the next "Grandma got run over by a Reindeer," said Porter, which will help build an audience for their full-length CD.

"The whole thing is pretty tongue-in-cheek. It's a joke song and it's definitely not an anti-Christmas song," Porter said. "We actually played it at Christmas-time last year in the bars and everyone liked it."

And the origin of the group's name "is not really any significant thing", Porter said.

"It's just kind of a gimmick in a way. I always wear my plaid shorts on stage," he said. "People come out and wear their plaid. It's kind of neat, actually."

PERKASIE ROCK AND ROLLERS
POUR OUT CHRISTMAS CHEER

For the four members of the Perkasie-based band Clashing Plaid, picking out Christmas cards should be pretty easy.  After all, the band could just hand out copies of the cover of their new CD.

"The cover is almost a Christmas card when you look at it," explained lead singer Anthony Porter.  Although no one would mistake it for a scene from Norman Rockwell. More like Johnny Walker Red.

The cover of the three-song promotional recording, "All I got for Christmas was Drunk", pictures a plate of cookies with a note that reads, "To Santa." Behind the cookies are six bottles wrapped in red and green plaid Christmas paper with a note that reads, "To You, from Clashing Plaid." From the corner of the picture, Santa's hand can be seen reaching for the bottles.

"It's supposed to be a joke," said Porter. "It's a play on words. I'm not anti-Christmas."

But Porter does believe the holidays have become too commercial.

"It's so commercialized, you go to the mall and it's packed and everybody has to get gifts, it's like one more deadline," Porter explained. "People get tense. I think everyone should relax."

Porter said the name of the band grew out of his own wardrobe.

"I used to wear a lot of plaid, and it's a recognition thing," said Porter. "I usually wear plaid on stage and people come to the shows wearing plaid."

"It's a dream, to be a rock star and be on MTV, but I'm old enough to know better. You have to balance your life," said Porter. "You have to be realistic. There are millions of great songs that nobody ever hears."
